Half Ironman Distance Training Day
When do people reckon we should plan the half distance training day for? Some time in May?
Also what location would be best? If we have it in Dunmore the swim would be grand and we could do the triathlon run twice for the run. The cycle is going to be a bit on the undulating side no matter what direction you head in though !

May sounds good but not the first weekend please as I'll be in Ibiza that weekend, not! But I will be away so not that weekend please. The cycle could be an out and back, in the main dunmore road, across the ring road and out the Cork Rd to Kilmac or thereabouts and back. That way the roads'd be decent enough. It'll be a good chance for us all to try out our new steeds.
I know a few people with kayaks who I could ask to help out with the swim.... Don't know about that hill twice on the run though

Re: Half Ironman Distance Training Day
May sounds good. Would be freezing waters before then...we will be doing our 1st outdoor swim in Dunmore East on May bank hol. Joey Hannon is on that weekend with Valentia on 23rd May so it would have to be in between on either 8th May or 15th May. (8th would suit better as we wouldn't have tired legs in Valentia)
As for the location, I think Tramore would be much easier and more suitable. We could swim 1 direction from Guilamines or pier to the beach (2k?) , the cycle should be on bigger roads which would suit TT bikes, maybe Tramore, Kilmeaden, Carrick, Leamybrien, Kilmeaden and back to Tramore 56 miles approx. Run could be in and out the main road to Waterford 13 miles approx.
Anyone from the club could do it as a training session, doing the whole distance or just doing certain parts of it, or as a team. The more the merrier!

Great idea for something to aim for training-wise, and I like the sound of the course as well (starting line approx. 3 mins from the house ). Either of the proposed May dates sounds good to me, although I may bring a hot water bottle on the swim leg.

Don't worry about the water temperature, the sewage keeps the water warm Don't swim anywhere near groups of sea gulls floating on the water though - they don't tend to be the only thing floating there
Note for Tramore Tourism Board: The above is a joke

Re: Half Ironman Distance Training Day
Is everyone still up for this?
Was thinking of next weekend, so Sat 8th May. Then, if the weather is really bad, then we have to option of cancelling it till the following weekend.
Sea will prob be too cold so we may have the use of 2 lanes in Splashworld (just checking with Stephen). So we can do 2000m in the pool followed by approx 56mile cycle (towards Carrick, Lemybrien and home) and 13mile run (Tramore to Waterford and back)
How many are interested? Other Club members can join in also but we have to limit the pool to the Ironmen only as we will only have use of it for a short time only.

Training day
I'm hoping to do the 8th May, providing the leg gets sorted. Small hamstring issue needs to be cleared first.

So, how's the weather looking?
What exactly is the bike course?
Are we planning on running the main Tramore Road. I want to drop water on the way out so just wondering.

Re: Half Ironman Distance Training Day
I'm on.
To hell with my hamstring, I'll probably have to cope with more pain on race day anyway so it'll be good practice.
I'll be at swimming this evening all going well.

Why?
Sounds terrible, think I may go for a 500m swim followed by 40km cycle (if there is no wind) and a 3 perhaps 5km run. Only if it is sunny though! Have fun ironmen!!!!!!!
May watch antics from comfort of chair while eating cream cakes.

Here I was thinking that Copperman would be handing out cream buns and hot chocolate at the turnaround on the run

What, no cream buns or hot chocolate? I knew there was a reason why I never come out with you guys.
I suppose I'll cope just this once.......

Re: Half Ironman Distance Training Day
The plan for Saturday
SWIM
Meeting at splashworld at 7.45am we only have the pool from 8 until 9 sharp so we need to be in the pool for 8 very important to be on time only 80 lenghts .
BIKE
The bike course is out of splashworld right on to waterford rd. second roundabout take a left then imediate right, head out tramore Orchardstown rd. as far as N25 cork rd. take a left through Kilmeaden, right at the new rounabout on to Portlaw Carrick on Suir rd. turn right over Fiddown bridge(old Carrick rd. is very rough at the moment) and on to the main Carrick rd.
Come to the traffic lights in Carrick and turn left, up to the end of the street turn right and left over the bridge, take a right at the end of the bridge and keep on the rd for Dungarvan through Mahon Bridge and on to Lemybrien turn left back on to the N25 Cork/wfd rd. back through Kilmeaden and turn right at Orchardstown back the same route to Splashworld. I will link a map tomorrow, dont forget enough food
RUN
Leave splashworld and head in to Waterford on the main rd. after Ballindud roundabout there is a path on the right hand side follow the path off the main rd, that will take you out at the kingfisher leisure centre/Superquinn back on to the main road and back to Tramore its should be 13miles. Helen will have a water station at about 4 miles on the way in and again at the same place on the way out at about 9 miles any extras anyone may need you can give to Helen. Unless Copperman will have the buns!
Remember its not a race just adapting to the distance anyone who wants to do part of it or a shorter run thats fine aswell, remember to have a way to secure your bike when you come back (keys of your car) there will be no one there to look after them. I will link some maps tomorrow.
