Thanks everyone. I'll give it all some more thought. Just one thing, are any of them any good for spotting defacation locations? My eyesight isn't the best without the glasses. Maybe i should just avoid the Portlaw woods......

Thinking about trying that 'defecating in the woods' lark as well, Tom - could be a great leap forward in the training.

Used a Timex for a long time - still serves as wristwatch - but couldn't recommend it. More attractive on the wrist than a Garmin, but far less functionality. Have been using the Garmin 305 for the last year, and am getting on with it famously. It does everything I ask of it with stuff to spare. Unless you're planning on serious nerdiness (cf. Spins, Slatts), I can't see significant benefit from the significant additional outlay for something more upmarket.

The 405X is an upgrade of the 405. It has a much longer battery life & looks like a normal watch. Its more expensive though

Money no object the Garmin 310XT
Otherwise the Garmin 305 Forerunner - does everything the 310Xt does except you HR during swim, which you probably won't use anyway.

Hi everyone. I'm about to invest in a hrm/gps gadget. I'm prepared to consider everything, regardless of price. Any recommendations/reviews, good or bad?

By the way, is anyone going to Galway? I'm also thinking about that this year....
